Jean-Philippe Mateta is in dispute with Crystal Palace over the final year of his contract, centred on a club option exercised in December 2024.
Palace held talks with the 29-year-old throughout 2024 and 2025 without agreement, then triggered the option to extend his deal to June 2027 to protect his value. He challenged the extension at the Premier League and, according to The Athletic, an independent tribunal ruled earlier this year that it remained valid, with FIFA’s dispute resolution chamber saying it lacked jurisdiction.
A move remains possible while the summer window is open, though Palace are content for him to see out his deal if their price is not met. A knee issue scuppered a winter switch to AC Milan worth more than €30 million, £26m, $35.6m after medical concerns.
After consulting several specialists, including one from former club Mainz, Mateta opted against surgery, preferring rest to aid recovery and boost his World Cup prospects with France. He made Didier Deschamps’s squad, playing three substitute cameos totalling 21 minutes as Spain eliminated them in the semi-finals.
Palace have since signed Jorgen Strand Larsen from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a club-record initial £43m, and he has scored four times since January. Aston Villa have loose interest should Ollie Watkins be sold, but Mateta is one of several options and Palace are unlikely to sell unless an offer matches the Milan valuation while contract talks remain at an impasse.
