Jeglertz praises Man City’s mentality after Bunny Shaw inspired win in WSL opener | OneFootball

Manchester City manager Andree Jeglertz has praised the mentality of his side following their 3-1 win over Birmingham City on the opening weekend of the WSL.

It took until the second half for the reigning champions to find the net, but Mary Fowler’s opener followed by a brace from Bunny Shaw saw City win comfortably by the end, Oceane Hurtre’s 90th minute goal merely a consolation for the visitors. 

“It’s more of a mentality,” Jeglertz said when asked about the difference in his side’s second-half performance, speaking to City’s club channel post-match.

“It was almost like we were expecting somebody to pass but we would put each other in difficult situations. We were not all the time committed to everything.

“We could put a cross in, but it was only Shaw in the box. Where is the eagerness to score?

“So I missed that in the first half. But it’s also important for the team to have a performance that I don’t need to tell them, and to turn around and do a second half [like that].”

Australian winger Fowler only scored once in nine WSL appearances last campaign, missing the start of the season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, with Jeglertz full of praise for the 23-year-old after netting City’s opener.

“Mary is an x-factor,” he said. “As long as she is working around the penalty area she can shoot with her right foot, left foot, and finish from different angles.

“She’s very well-rounded. So we are getting something from her and I’m very pleased with that.”

There were also debuts off the bench for summer signings Beth Mead (Arsenal) and Carlotta Wamser (Bayer Leverkusen), the pair impressing Jeglertz. 

“Both of them came on with the energy and they enjoyed playing with the players we have.

“There are so many good players around Beth. She likes that and you see that, so she will contribute more. She needs to learn how they are playing and they need to learn how she is playing, and that takes time.”

“And Carlotta coming in is also great to see. She was also running up and down in those 30 minutes and really putting energy into the game. She will definitely be a good contribution to the team.”
