Sunderland have confirmed that highly rated full-back Jenson Jones has signed a new two-year contract.
The academy defender agreed fresh terms after an encouraging under-21 campaign around Régis Le Bris’ first-team group, making 14 league appearances and training regularly with the seniors.
He was named on the bench for several Premier League fixtures, underlining his progress. The deal rewards that development and gives him the chance to impress in pre-season as Sunderland prepare for another campaign.
Jones described the agreement as a great feeling and a big opportunity, and hopes to show what he can do in pre-season and be around the first team. He credited senior players for helping him grow, and being so close to his boyhood goal has only increased his desire.
Head of Academy John Hewitson welcomed the extension, highlighting his under-21 impact and consistent involvement with the senior group, and called the deal a sign of the club’s commitment and belief in his ability.
