Liverpool’s miserable injury luck has gone from bad to worse, with summer signing Jeremy Jacquet suffering a ‘serious’ shoulder injury while playing for Rennes.

The 20-year-old centre-back was among the hottest properties on the January transfer market, but Liverpool pipped Chelsea to his signature on a pre-contract agreement which will see him move to Merseyside this summer.

It remains to be seen how much football Jacquet will play before his Premier League move, though, after he suffered a serious injury in Rennes’ defeat by ten-man Lens on Saturday.

He was helped off by a trainer after an awkward fall, and appeared to be in considerable pain as he made his way down the tunnel.

Speaking at full-time, Rennes manager Habib Beye said: “For Jeremy, it's his shoulder, and for Abdelhamid [Ait Boudlal, the other Rennes player injured] it's muscular.

"We'll have time to see, but it's definitely quite serious for both of them."

The news of Jacquet’s injury could prove a considerable blow for Arne Slot and Liverpool, though he has plenty of time to recover before joining up with the Reds this summer.

The exact severity of Jacquet’s injury remains to be seen, with an update expected in the coming days.

Speaking after Liverpool confirmed Jacquet’s signing for a reported £60m, Slot gushed over the youngster’s potential.

“[It’s] very pleasing because he is a very big talent and maybe even more than a talent but we speak cause of his age. We weren't the only ones interested in him so a big compliment to those who are signing the players.

“[He is] another example of the model we use at this club: young, talented at the start of their careers, and can improve and help us for short and definitely long term. We have signed a lot of those recently and the mid to long-term future is in as very good place."

Jacquet will hope to add some stability to Slot’s back-line, which has spent long stretches of this campaign without Joe Gomez, Jeremie Frimpong, and Ibrahima Konate due to injury. Italian youngster Giovanni Leoni has also missed much of the campaign after tearing his ACL on debut.
