Liverpool: Jérémy Jacquet hints at Ibrahima Konaté stay as Anfield move approaches

Jacquet prepares for life at Liverpool

Jérémy Jacquet is already speaking like a player who understands the scale of Liverpool, the standards of Anfield, and the size of the education awaiting him at Kirkby.

The 20 year old Stade Rennais academy graduate is due to join Liverpool this summer after the clubs agreed a €72m deal during the winter transfer window. For Arne Slot, Jacquet represents more than another defensive signing. He is part of the next phase, a centre back recruited with the future firmly in mind.

Virgil van Dijk turns 35 in July, and his Liverpool contract runs until 2027. The Dutchman remains a commanding figure, a captain, an organiser, and one of the finest defenders of his generation. For Jacquet, the chance to learn from him clearly carries huge value.

“At Liverpool, apart from the fact that Van Dijk is nearing the end of his career, training with him is going to be huge“, Jacquet said to Ouest-France. “He’s going to teach me so much.“

Konaté clue catches attention

The more intriguing part of Jacquet’s comments concerns Ibrahima Konaté. The France international’s contract situation has become a pressing issue, with his current deal due to expire in June, before Liverpool begin pre season preparations.

Konaté may have played his final game for the club in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Brentford, although Jacquet’s words suggest he expects the defender to remain on Merseyside.

“There’s also Ibou Konaté, who can help me settle in. Training with guys like that, it doesn’t get any better than that.”

For Liverpool supporters, that line will land with interest. Jacquet did not announce a renewal, of course, but his assumption is notable. Young players rarely speak so casually about senior team mates unless they believe those figures will be present when they arrive.

Liverpool succession plan takes shape

Liverpool have long prided themselves on defensive authority, from Van Dijk’s calm dominance to Konaté’s athletic aggression. Jacquet now enters that environment as a gifted young centre back with serious expectation attached.

His arrival speaks to planning, succession, and ambition. If Konaté stays, Jacquet gains a French speaking guide and a proven Premier League defender beside him. If Van Dijk remains central to the dressing room, he gains a masterclass every day.

For Liverpool, Jacquet is not merely a signing for tomorrow. He is a statement about what comes next.
