Jeremy Monga will undergo a medical at Manchester City today as a £12.5m transfer from Leicester City edges closer. The deal is set to include a sell-on clause.
City have fended off Manchester United and Premier League champions Arsenal. Arsenal were seen as favourites but felt Leicester's price was too high, allowing former Leicester boss Enzo Maresca to move in and secure his signature.
Regarded as one of the country's outstanding teenage prospects, Monga has been at Leicester since the age of eight and has made 37 first-team appearances. He agreed a one-year scholarship last year that was due to become a professional deal on July 10.
He is the third-youngest player to feature in a Premier League match, behind Arsenal duo Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri. His imminent move would make him the joint most expensive League One departure, a mark held by Mark McGuinness' switch from Luton Town to Sheffield United last summer.
"It's very tough for a young kid when clubs like that come calling," said former Leicester striker Emile Heskey, speaking to Grosvenor Sport.
"He's 17 this summer, so that means he is going to be on a second year scholarship. Really, he should be concentrating on that and getting some actual football under his belt."
