Jesse Lingard has now gone 20 consecutive matches without scoring for Corinthians after featuring in Sunday’s 3-1 home loss to Fluminense at Neo Química Arena in the Brasileirão’s 28th round.

His last goal came on 30 April, in a 2-0 win over Peñarol in the Copa Libertadores group stage. It was his second for the club, nine days after his first in a 1-0 victory against Barra-SC in the Copa do Brasil. According to Meu Timao, the midfielder has also dealt with personal issues during this period.

Since that April strike, the Englishman’s run has stretched to almost five months without a goal. He has completed 90 minutes in only four games this year, against Flamengo and Athletico-PR, plus the 1-1 draw with Independiente Santa Fe in the Libertadores and the 3-2 win over São Paulo in the league, both in May.

In total he has 30 appearances for Corinthians, 11 of them starts, with two goals and one assist.

His contract runs until the end of the current year. Corinthians now have a training-only spell during the September international break and return on 7 October away to Internacional at Beira-Rio in round 29.
