Jill Scott praises ‘brilliant’ Champions Cup and backs Arsenal to lift title | OneFootball

Former England international Jill Scott has been singing her praises for the Champions Cup this week, with Arsenal leading the way in the inaugural competition.

The Champions Cup semi-finals get underway on Wednesday night with the Gunners facing AS FAR.

While she was in her prime Jill Scott won almost everything in her football career.

The former Lioness never got a chance to play in the Champions Cup however, with the competition launching new in 2026.

Scott sung the praises of the new tournament this week, as women’s football continues to grow using different avenues in the sport.

“I think it’s brilliant. When we look at the men’s game, obviously doing the FIFA Club World Cup and how well that was received, I think it’s so good that the women are doing this and the fact that everybody’s going to see these elite players playing here in London.” Scott said.

“I’ve spoken a lot today about how there was always a bit of bragging rights when you were a player, like, how would your team do in the NWSL? And you never really could give them the answer because you never had these opportunities.”

Although Arsenal kick off their journey in the cup against AS FAR, they could meet with Gotham FC in the final.

“It’s brilliant for the game and it also shows how much FIFA are invested in the women’s game. Obviously, there’s a lot of prize money as well, which will help the winning team a lot.”

Despite not playing in the event, Scott was an integral part of the launch process for the Champions Cup.

The former Manchester City star posed with the new trophy and admitted that she thinks Arsenal will lift the first title.

Arsenal’s road to glory

The Champions Cup semi-finals get underway on Wednesday. Gotham FC take on Corinthians first at the GTech Community Stadium, with Arsenal vs AS FAR taking place shortly after.

The two teams who advance to the final will play each other at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday for the right to be crowned Champions of the inaugural cup competition.

The Gunners’ WSL game against Leicester was cancelled due to their involvement in the Champions Cup.

This means that when they return to action in the league next week Arsenal may be playing catch-up to the likes of Chelsea in the top four.

Arsenal certainly won’t mind playing catch-up if they have a trophy banked in the cabinet early in the season.
