Few players embody the future of modern attacking football quite like Julian Alvarez, and it appears Joan Laporta believes the Argentine could eventually become the face of Barcelona’s next era.

According to ESPN, the Barcelona president remains convinced that the Atletico Madrid forward possesses the qualities needed to lead Hansi Flick’s project in the years ahead. 

With Robert Lewandowski’s era at Barcelona coming to an end, the club’s hierarchy is exploring profiles capable of carrying the attack into a new cycle.

On that note, landing the World Cup winner would be an enormous challenge, but Laporta has no intention of abandoning the idea unless circumstances make it completely impossible.

Laporta sees Alvarez as Barcelona’s attacking leader

The admiration for Alvarez within the Barcelona boardroom is said to run deep, as he is viewed as a player who can elevate the team’s level immediately.

In fact, Laporta has made his intentions clear since returning to the presidency, identifying the Atletico Madrid striker as one of the club’s priority targets for the coming years.

Convincing Atletico to negotiate, however, will not be straightforward because, first, he is important to their sporting project and second, he has a contract with the club until 2030.

Still, Laporta feels a certain responsibility towards the player, especially after Alvarez has shown openness towards a new challenge.

So what now?

Barcelona’s sporting planning increasingly revolves around signing a new forward, and this is exactly where the Julian Alvarez Barcelona links gain significance.

Few forwards combine intensity, movement and versatility in the same way as the Argentine international. 

Whether operating as a central striker, supporting forward or drifting into wider spaces, Alvarez offers tactical flexibility that aligns closely with Hansi Flick’s footballing principles.

Right now, Laporta feels the club is entering a healthier financial period, and that has created optimism that Barcelona can once again compete for top-level signings.

However, there is little doubt that signing the Argentine would be among the toughest operations Barcelona could attempt.

As such, negotiations would involve figures such as Miguel Angel Gil Marin and former Barcelona executive Mateu Alemany, both of whom are now central to Atletico’s sporting structure.

Yet Laporta has never been afraid of ambitious pursuits and he does not intend on giving up either.
