João Basso returned for Santos after almost seven months, replacing Adonis Frías at half-time in a 1-1 draw with São Paulo at Vila Belmiro in the Brasileirão second round on Wednesday 4. Frías went off with discomfort in his right calf.

According to Diario Do Peixe, Basso had been sidelined for about 194 days and is fifth in Vojvoda’s pecking order behind Zé Ivaldo, Frías, Alexis Duarte and Luan Peres. The club have renegotiated a debt of around €2.5m with Arouca linked to his 2023 transfer, with only the first instalment paid.

His previous appearance for Santos was on 26 July last year, a 2-2 draw at Sport’s Ilha do Retiro in Série A, where he scored.

After that he suffered a left adductor injury and missed games against Juventude, Cruzeiro, Vasco, Bahia and Fluminense. Once recovered he made squads but did not play under the Argentine coach, and this year he was on the bench in every other match except the Paulista clássico with Corinthians.

Basso spent early 2024 on loan at Estoril, making 14 appearances, then returned mid-year and later featured in Série B for Santos, scoring two in eight. His contract runs to the end of 2026. A Paraná academy graduate, he moved to Portugal with Estoril Praia, Real Sport Club and Arouca in 2019 before joining Santos.
