FC Barcelona’s 2-1 defeat to Real Sociedad in La Liga at the Reale Arena may have halted their winning run, but their performance was by no means lacking on the night. On any other occasion, they would comfortably have beaten their opponents playing the way they did.
One important moment in the game was Cancelo’s return in Blaugrana colours, which came around the 62nd minute. He replaced Alejandro Balde on the left flank, then shifted to the right around the 80th minute.
After the game, Hansi Flick suggested a versatile role for the experienced Portuguese full-back, noting that he could be used on either flank in the months to come, and Cancelo certainly adds attacking impetus wherever he plays.
Joao Cancelo himself spoke to the media in the aftermath of the loss. Speaking to DAZN, as quoted by SPORT, he revealed what instructions Hansi Flick gave him. He said:
“Flick has asked me to take players on and go one-on-one. Even though I missed a few passes, I think I came into the game well.”
The defender then confirmed that the club signed him because they wanted his versatility and experience. He continued:
“They want versatility, because I can play on both flanks, and experience to help the younger players.”
Finally, the ex-Juventus man offered an overall assessment of Barcelona’s game, in line with everyone else’s. He said:
“We were better and created chances, but football is like that, and sometimes these things happen.”
In his short cameo, Joao Cancelo showed flashes of what he is capable of. He cut inside on the left and delivered a delightful cross to Jules Kounde, which the Frenchman headed on to the bar, with Barcelona striking the woodwork yet again on the night.
Although he looked rusty, Cancelo is bound to improve and find greater understanding with his teammates in the weeks to come. Let us see whether he is ready to start against Slavia Praha in the Champions League.
