Former Benfica presidential candidate João Diogo Manteigas has invoked the club’s history and Champions League identity in a social media video, urging focus for the run-in.
According to Glorioso 1904, he posted on his official account ahead of the final three league matches, with Benfica chasing second place.
Manteigas said Benfica belong among Europe’s elite and in the Champions League, and cast the remaining fixtures as three finals that could take them where they feel they deserve to be.
He acknowledged this season has not gone as desired, yet maintained the club should be a regular presence in Europe’s top competition. He has been notably active around Benfica matters in recent weeks.
He added that the team’s history comes first, their DNA is Champions League, and support will be there whenever the club needs it.
To secure Champions League participation, Benfica must finish second and will need to overcome Famalicão, Braga and Estoril.
In his pre-match press conference, José Mourinho underlined the aim to take the last nine points and said there is no room for relaxation.
