Joao Gomes is expected to undergo a medical on Friday before completing a £38 million move from Wolves to Aston Villa, according to ExpressAndStar.com.
The Brazilian left the Championship club’s training camp in Portugal on Thursday to return to the UK after the clubs agreed a deal. The fee has prompted frustration among some Wolves supporters, who view it as relatively low.
His exit had been widely anticipated following Wolves’ relegation, with Atletico Madrid long considered favourites for his signature. With that interest cooling in recent weeks, Villa have moved to bolster midfield after losing Amadou Onana to a long-term injury.
Gomes has made 130 appearances in all competitions since arriving from Flamengo in 2023 and is viewed as a replacement for Onana. Villa also hope to complete the signing of 20-year-old Switzerland international midfielder Johan Manzambi from Freiburg later on Friday, and are in talks with Bayern Munich over a possible loan for Joao Palhinha.
Manzambi would become Villa’s record buy at a fee exceeding £50m. Tielemans joined United earlier this week for £35m, and Lucas Digne is on course to join Paris Saint-Germain once he returns from World Cup duty with France.
Former Brighton left-back Pervis Estupinan, now with AC Milan, is being targeted as Digne’s replacement. Unai Emery’s squad is facing its biggest summer shake-up since his arrival at the club.
Wolves are expected to be active as the season nears, with a replacement for Gomes a priority. Their summer business so far comprises three signings, Kieran Trippier, Raul Jimenez and winger Rafiki Said.
