Joao Gomes’ Wolves stint is set to end, the midfielder has left Wolves’ Portugal training camp to undergo a medical ahead of a 38 million move to Aston Villa, according to ExpressAndStar.com.
That would conclude a three-and-a-half-year Molineux spell of 116 Premier League games and 130 in total after a January 2023 arrival for 18.7 million, completed amid a 'Free Joao Gomes' campaign when Flamengo wavered under Lyon interest.
He scored the winner on debut, coming off the bench in a 2-1 comeback at Southampton in February 2023. Wolves played the second half with 10 men after Mario Lemina was sent off before the break.
His FA Cup bow turned sour with a straight red inside nine minutes at Brentford in January 2024, though Wolves drew to force a replay, and just over a month later he scored twice in a 2-1 win at Tottenham.
Early 2024 brought a first Brazil call-up. Without youth caps, he debuted at Wembley and completed the 90 minutes in a 1-0 victory over England.
He signed a five-year deal in April 2025, tying him to Wolves until 2030. Last season he missed only three of 38 league games as their eight-year top-flight stay ended, finishing with one goal, one assist and several end-of-season awards.
After relegation, speculation over his future grew. A switch to Atletico Madrid was close before the Spanish club withdrew, and he is now poised to join Villa in what would be the biggest transfer ever between the West Midlands rivals.
