João Rego is understood to have agreed a new contract with Benfica after considering an exit late in the winter window.
Record writes that Benfica had been working for months to finalise the process and, as the window closed, convinced the No 84 to extend, with confirmation expected soon.
Rego’s current deal runs until summer 2028, and the renewal is likely to take it to 2030. The 20-year-old under-21 international had been hesitant to sign, but the final days of the window prompted a change.
Promoted by Bruno Lage, Rego has become a consistent selection under José Mourinho. The midfielder has been regularly named in squads, missing only the Tondela match.
This season he has made 19 appearances for Benfica, eight in Liga Portugal Betclic, five in Liga Portugal Meu Super, three in the Taça de Portugal, two in the Champions League and one in the Taça da Liga. Across 573 minutes, he has scored one goal. He is valued at three million euros.
