Joe Gelhardt is understood to be in talks over a permanent return to Hull City, as the Tigers make a late push to beat Birmingham City to his signing.

According to Leeds Live, City are in negotiations with Leeds United over a long-term deal for the 24-year-old forward.

Gelhardt had appeared close to joining Birmingham, with Wrexham also linked, but Hull accelerated plans after debating a move throughout the summer.

He scored 15 goals for City last term, including the second in the 2-0 play-off semi-final victory at Millwall, as they sealed promotion to the Premier League in May.

Across two loan spells from Elland Road, he made 60 appearances in Black and Amber, registering 20 goals and six assists, and becoming a firm favourite.

Manager Sergej Jakirovic had identified Gelhardt as a priority and City will now attempt to finalise terms, with the striker understood to favour a permanent return to East Yorkshire.

If talks progress quickly, there is optimism he could feature in Saturday's friendly against Nice, the Tigers' final pre-season run-out.
