A new hint has been dropped on Joe Taylor's Huddersfield Town future amid increasing speculation linking the striker with a move to the Championship

Huddersfield Town will now be spending a third campaign in League One after missing out on a top-six berth for the second season running, having been tipped as potential title contenders before a ball was kicked.

It has been yet another turbulent term at the Accu Stadium, with a mass squad upheaval last summer failing to bear fruit and managerial change being sanctioned once more.

Lee Grant was relieved of his duties back in January as Huddersfield sought the appointment of ex-Bristol City and Norwich boss Liam Manning in an effort to bolster their promotion efforts following a mixed first-half of the season, although Town are now currently being led by Martin Drury until the end of the campaign.

The futures of a number of Terriers players could well hang very much in the balance as we edge ever closer to the summer transfer window, where further squad surgery may just take place.

It's particularly unclear what lies ahead for Joe Taylor, who, after joining Wigan Athletic on loan during the January window in a move first revealed exclusively by Football League World, has earned interest elsewhere having rediscovered his goalscoring touch for the Latics.

A reported £3 million+ arrival from Luton Town in January of last year, Taylor had returned just six strikes from 34 League One appearances for Huddersfield before making the move to Wigan.

The striker has currently scored 11 goals in 19 league outings at Wigan, helping the side remain in the division while potentially setting himself up for a permanent move away from West Yorkshire once the summer rolls around.

Joe Taylor, Huddersfield Town transfer exit hint dropped

Taylor's future at Huddersfield has been the subject of increasing speculation as he continues to shine on loan away from the club.

Last month, FLW broke the news of interest from a number of Championship sides including Preston North End and League One-bound Oxford United, whereas the likes of Ipswich Town and Stoke City have been separately linked with the 23-year-old's sought-after signature.

Now, however, a clear hint has been dropped about where exactly Taylor could be playing his football in the 2026/27 season.

That hint has come from none other than Wigan director Lucas Danson, who was quizzed on whether the Latics will be able to seal a permanent move for the striker this summer.

Any such deal would, of course, appear somewhat out-of-reach for Gary Caldwell's side considering Championship competition and the fact that Huddersfield will likely intend on recouping as much money as possible if they decide to sanction Taylor's permanent exit.

Danson played down the prospect of a fresh deal while suggesting what could lie ahead for Taylor, with Paul Kendrick of Wigan Today reporting that the Latics chief quipped back: "I think he'll go very well in the Championship next year."

Wigan supporters were, quite naturally, frustrated to learn that their side will not be in contention to sign Taylor in the coming months, and it's a revelation which may also spark discourse across the Pennines at Huddersfield where the forward has long been a divisive figure.

Joe Taylor, Huddersfield Town transfer hint is no surprise

It's little surprise to see that Taylor is continually being linked with a switch back to the Championship, having rekindled his reputation in recent times to earn an increasing number of reported suitors.

Back at Huddersfield, yet another seismic shake-up of the playing squad may just be in order and Taylor represents a sellable asset to fund that rebuilding process, with his time with the Terriers having simply not worked out.

It's likely that the ex-Wales youth international will value the opportunity to potentially prove his goalscoring mettle at Championship level, too, as opposed to spending yet another campaign in the third-tier.

Taylor's priority may now be finding the right club in the Championship if he does indeed on leaving Huddersfield permanently, and that's what is now seemingly expected to happen.
