Joe Willock’s late goal sent a relieved Newcastle into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup as the Premier League side scraped to a 1-0 victory at Championship outfit Millwall.

Just before going ahead, the Magpies had been given a fright when a shot from Tairyk Arconte hit a post, with the hosts at that point threatening to upset the competition’s winners of two seasons ago.

Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle sent on Anthony Elanga and deadline day signing Matias Fernandez-Pardo in an effort finally force a breakthrough.

But it was Millwall substitute Arconte who was the closest to opening the scoring in the 79th minute when he got away from Tino Livramento before his shot came back off the near post.

Having survived that scare, the visitors snatched victory with nine minutes left when Lewis Hall’s ball across the six-yard box was flicked in by Willock.

The Lions brought on 15-year-old midfielder Regan Anderson, who became Millwall’s second youngest player, in the time that remained, but Newcastle held firm in what was a hard-fought tie.

Jorgen Strand Larsen struck twice to propel Crystal Palace into the fourth round with a 3-0 victory over Middlesbrough at Selhurst Park.

Strand Larsen nodded home in each half before substitute Daichi Kamada lobbed keeper Sol Brynn for the third as Palace showed their clinical touch in a lively tie that was largely dominated by Boro.

But having named the Championship’s leading scorer Will Lankshear on the bench as both teams made eight changes, they lacked the firepower needed to capitalise on their impressive endeavour in the final third.

Ryan Christie scored a hat-trick to fire Marco Rose to his first win as Bournemouth manager as the Cherries beat Championship side Lincoln 4-0.

The Scotland international starred for the hosts with goals in the seventh, 69th and 88th minutes for his second career hat-trick, with Rayan stepping off the bench to wrap up the victory in stoppage time.

Chemsdine Talbi’s goal was the difference as Sunderland claimed a 1-0 win over Hull.

Regis Le Bris made 11 changes from the squad who drew with Brentford at the weekend, while Sergej Jakirovic also shuffled his pack with eight switches from their goalless stalemate against Aston Villa.

A lacklustre meeting at the Stadium of Light between the two Premier League sides eventually saw Talbi’s chipped finish put the Black Cats ahead 71 minutes in.

Bradford made their way into the fourth round by disposing of Leyton Orient 3-1. Goals from Will Swan, Stephen Humphrys and Nick Powell were more than enough to answer a Macaulay Gillesphey own goal.
