Ex-Premier League footballer Joey Barton has been remanded in custody after appearing in court over an alleged assault near a golf club. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the 43-year-old was held following a hearing at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 10 March.

From Widnes, Cheshire, Barton is accused alongside Gary O’Grady, 50, of grievous bodily harm against Kevin Lynch at Fairway, Huyton, on Sunday, eight March. He is also charged with wounding with intent.

The pair appeared in the dock and spoke only to confirm their details. The court heard Mr Lynch, 51, had been drinking at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club with them before a row moved outside.

A witness saw a man assaulted outside and an ambulance was called. Mr Lynch is in a serious but stable condition, and there is a possibility he may lose sight in one eye.

The case was sent to Liverpool Crown Court for a plea hearing on seven April. O’Grady was released on conditional bail.

The former Manchester City and QPR midfielder has one England cap and later managed Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers. He also hosts the podcast Common Sense With Joey Barton.
