Jon Martín has been handed Real Sociedad’s number six, succeeding Aritz Elustondo.
According to Diario Vasco, he is set to debut the shirt against Celta at Anoeta on Thursday if there are no late setbacks, while new right-back Héctor Fort will wear 22 vacated by Goti.
In July he said taking Elustondo’s six would bring him great joy, but added the call was not his to make and that he was calm about it.
He later signed through June 2032, the club’s longest contract. At 20 he has cemented a place in defence and already has more than 50 first-team appearances. He expressed happiness at staying home, calling Real Sociedad the club that has given him everything since the age of 12.
The number six has long been linked to standout centre-backs or deep midfielders at the club. Elustondo claimed it in summer 2019 after Héctor Moreno, who had taken it when Iñigo Martínez left for Athletic in the winter window of 17/18.
Elustondo had previously worn 26, scoring from near halfway at Anoeta against Athletic. Earlier sixes include Martínez from 11/12, Mikel Labaka from 04/05 before handing it to the left-footer from Ondarroa, plus Schürrer for two seasons, Luiz Alberto for one, Jon Andoni Pikabea, Agustín Gajate and Inaxio Kortabarria.
