OGC Nice’s match against Paris FC was marred by homophobic chants from the Populaire Sud, Le Gym’s ultras group.

The game was initially interrupted in the 83rd minute when chants targeting the travelling Paris FC fans forced the referee to halt proceedings. The speaker then warns the offending fans to stop the chanting, stating that the game will not get back underway until they stop. That request fell on deaf ears.

There was then a second warning and another demand to stop the homophobic chants. Once again, the Populaire Sud continued, forcing Jonathan Clauss, Nice captain on the day, to plead for them to stop. This request was then heard, and the game got back underway.

Just moments later, Paris FC equalised from the penalty spot. The chants then returned in injury-time (90+5), but this time for a briefer period, before stopping once again. The game would go on to finish 1-1.

In a post-match mixed zone interview, Clauss reacted to the chants. “There are things that should not be heard inside a stadium, even elsewhere. We are very happy that the supporters are there every weekend, but these messages… no,” he said.
