The Wanderers full-back was the subject of initial criticism after being substituted against Huddersfield Town

Bolton Wanderers full-back Jordi Osei-Tutu has hit back at initial criticism which came his way on social media prior to his side's dramatic late comeback against Huddersfield Town at the Accu Stadium on Thursday night.

With the League One encounter being the first of several games selected for Sky Sports broadcast this weekend, plenty of eyes were cast on the performances of two of the division's expected promotion front-runners, with Huddersfield not afraid to flex their financial muscle under Kevin Nagle during the off-season following the appointment of Lee Grant, whilst the Whites are under the management of one-time third tier title-winner, Steven Schumacher.

Both sides have stuttered in recent weeks in terms of results and performances, and featuring before their other 22 divisional counterparts in the latest round of matches, a victory for either side could have propelled them into, or at least on the periphery of the play-off places after their prior inconsistencies.

With Wanderers struggling on their travels in recent weeks and months, it looked as if those who had made the rather short journey across the Pennines were witnessing 'more of the same' from their side as Chelsea loanee, Leo Castledine headed the Terriers in front after just seven minutes, before summer recruits, Sam Dalby and Amario Cozier-Duberry, turned the scoreline on its head in second half injury-time to give the visitors a first away success since April 1st.

It's fair to say that the 90 minutes weren't a smooth ride for Bolton though, despite the fact that their hosts' performance levels massively influenced what would be a dramatic late show.

As such, the aforementioned Osei-Tutu was the subject of major criticism from one supporter in particular, as he was replaced by Dalby with just four minutes of normal time remaining, with the man who scored the eventual equaliser also on the receiving end of said initial negativity.

The 27-year-old was initially signed by Ian Evatt during his final transfer window at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, joining from Vfl Bochum on a two-year contract last August.

Thursday night's encounter was the former Arsenal academy graduate's 44th appearance across all competitions for the Whites, having racked up three goals and as many assists during a 14-month period.

After making 32 league appearances last term, it has been a rather mixed start to the current campaign for the former Gunners man, suffering a hamstring issue which kept him sidelined from late August until the beginning of the month.

Despite being a natural right-sided full-back, Osei-Tutu's first start since another televised encounter against Reading on August 20th saw him feature in an advanced role on the left side of midfield, with his performance being solid, if not spectacular in an unnatural position.

However, this wasn't the viewpoint of one particular Bolton supporter who, in the midst of being frustrated that his side may lose out on an opportunity to take points off an expected promotion rival, stated: Osei Tutu limps off. See ya in 3 months, Jordi.

"No confidence in Dalby to grab anything for us (after being substituted in place of Osei-Tutu). God forbid he prove me wrong..," the post on X read.

It remains to be seen how long, if at all, that Osei-Tutu may spend on the sidelines after coming off in the latter stages. But, with Dalby scoring his first for the club after turning home a neat Cozier-Duberry cross, before the latter fired home a fierce effort beyond Lee Nicholls, the aforementioned post clearly caught the defender's attention.

As such, he posted a 'GIF' of Cameroonian striker and worldwide footballing star, Samuel Eto'o's 'old man' celebration after scoring for Chelsea against Tottenham Hotspur in March 2014, in which the striker utilised one of the Stamford Bridge corner flags as a 'walking stick'.

The original poster also took the response in rather good spirits, replying to a responder who referenced the initial negative outlook with: "Hahah TBF (to be fair) when I posted this we looked absolutely dead and buried. Happy to be proven wrong!"

Bolton Wanderers will hope Huddersfield Town comeback kickstarts League One promotion bid

It has been a mixed calendar year and start to the 2025/26 season for Bolton, who will now hope to use the drama of Thursday night as a springboard for consistency.

Schumacher oversaw a major squad overhaul in the summer, in which seasoned campaigners such as Nathan Baxter, Gethin Jones and Ricardo Santos departed among others, with several new permanent and temporary additions brought to the club as short and long-term replacements.

A handful of those, such as Cozier-Duberry and Mason Burstow, have made significant impressions in the opening two months of the season, with an array of stunning individual goals and performances often compensating for frustrating draws and defeats in games the club have been favourites to take three points from.

They now sit just five points behind current leaders Stevenage, highlighting that promotion was nowhere near out of reach beforehand, and can still be achieved over the course of the remaining 32 games.
