Chelsea progressed to the League Cup quarter-final with a 4-3 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers last night.
They led 3-0 at half-time but inexplicably let the hosts back into the game thanks to some calamitous performances.
Facundo Buonanotte gave away the ball that led to Tolu Arokodare’s first goal early in the second half, starting Chelsea’s capitulation.
Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen could have saved the second goal from David Wolfe. He allowed the shot under his arm, not for the first time this season.
Jorgensen does not inspire confidence as a goalkeeper. His shot-stopping, kicking and cross collection are worrisome.
The Blues have issues with Robert Sanchez, but Jorgensen has been notably below par every time he has had the starting berth.
Since joining Chelsea last season, the 23-year-old has been disappointing.
The Dane has failed to justify his place in a top Premier League squad, looking nervous and uncertain whenever called upon.
His hesitancy when claiming crosses often spreads panic through the backline, and his lack of command in the box undermines the defence’s stability.
He committed another costly blunder in his last start, allowing a tame penalty to squirm beneath his hands, a mistake emblematic of his season.
For a club with Chelsea’s ambitions, having a goalkeeper so unconvincing between the sticks isn’t sustainable.
Every appearance feels like an accident waiting to happen, and it’s clear that Jorgensen is out of his depth at this level.
Thankfully, the Blues have Mike Penders developing impressively out on loan.
The Belgian’s return to Stamford Bridge next season could finally provide Chelsea with a reliable goalkeeper who looks comfortable wearing the shirt.
