José Boto’s standing at Flamengo has come under strain after the sudden dismissal of Filipe Luís, which upset figures inside the club.
According to GE, Boto is enduring his biggest internal image crisis at the club.
The decision to remove Filipe Luís after the 8-0 win over Madureira was taken by president Bap, and Boto delivered it. After the post-match press conference, he called the coach to the Maracanã dressing room for a conversation lasting under a minute.
Boto told Filipe Luís the call was Bap’s and that he did not agree, though word inside the club suggested he had held talks with Leonardo Jardim days earlier.
Bap continues to back Boto, yet the Portuguese is not a unanimous choice and has been targeted by recent supporter protests. Players and staff had already criticised his communication before the sacking, and the process made matters more delicate.
On Tuesday afternoon he addressed the squad before training, stressing that responsibility for the poor moment was shared by the board and players and that some had abused the freedom given by Filipe Luís. He also addressed players frustrated over salaries, citing Arrasca as a model for earning improved terms through performances, and said a new coach would come with only one way forward, to work and win.
