Benfica are preparing a significant financial outlay to sign João Palhinha, with the deal potentially totalling about 41 million euros over four years, including a fee to Bayern Munich, wages and possible bonuses. According to Glorioso 1904, the scale of the commitment has drawn criticism from José Manuel Freitas.
The pundit argues the price is excessive for a 31-year-old and suggests the move is geared towards winning now rather than offering longer-term value.
Speaking on Now, he said spending such a sum on a player of that age is, in his view, an absurd decision.
Even so, he did not question Palhinha’s quality, describing him as highly reliable and someone who could solve numerous problems for Marco Silva and add significant dimension to the side.
He added that while the signing may appeal to supporters, he questioned Benfica’s calculations given the midfielder’s age, saying he would agree with the move if Palhinha were 26.
