Benfica have not targeted the Atlético Madrid centre-back and there have been no negotiations between the Lisbon club and Atlético for the Uruguay international.

One major obstacle to any move was the defender’s contract. He is tied to Atlético until 2028 and earns a salary considered too high for Benfica’s budget.

Amid rumours linking the 31-year-old to the Estádio da Luz, there was never any concrete approach. Benfica remain focused on alternative options and do not view Diego Simeone’s long-time pupil as a realistic addition to Marco Silva’s squad.
