José Mourinho issued a late-night apology after reviewing a key incident from Benfica’s win over Gil Vicente, accepting that his earlier criticism of VAR official Tiago Martins was misplaced.

According to Record, the Benfica head coach said he had seen another angle of the moment he first thought was a penalty and, realising it was not, apologised for his post-match comment.

Earlier in his press conference, Mourinho had argued that a clear penalty had been missed in the phase before the corner that led to Benfica’s goal.

In his late message, he also described it as a very important victory against a team currently in fifth and pushing for fourth, which he felt added value to a hard game.

Mourinho had singled out Martins when voicing his frustration, but later withdrew that stance after viewing the footage.
