Josh Windass has reacted to a social media post by his ex-Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl, who reflected on his start to life at RB Salzburg.

Former Sheffield Wednesday forward Josh Windass has taken to social media to react to a post from his ex-Owls manager Danny Rohl, who is now in charge of Austrian side RB Salzburg.

A new era is underway at Hillsborough after David Storch's takeover of the club earlier this year, but Windass and Rohl were two of the iconic Wednesday figures during former owner Dejphon Chansiri's turbulent decade-long tenure.

After spells as a coach with RB Leipzig, Southampton, Bayern Munich and the German national team, Rohl took his first steps into management with Wednesday in October, and he inherited a tough situation with the club sitting bottom of the Championship table after picking up just three points from their first 11 games.

However, Rohl masterminded one of the greatest escapes ever seen in the second tier to save the Owls from relegation before guiding them to a 12th-placed finish the following season, but his time at Hillsborough ended in controversy.

As Chansiri's reign began to collapse, Rohl initially failed to report back to Sheffield for the start of pre-season training, while he also conducted a number of interviews with the German media in which he frequently stated his desire to leave the club, and he eventually departed by mutual consent last July, just over a week before the start of the season.

Just under three months later, Rohl returned to the dugout as he took charge of Rangers, where he also walked into a difficult situation after Russell Martin's disastrous 17-game stint left the Scottish giants in chaos.

Rohl impressively managed to haul the Gers back into the Scottish Premiership title race, but their season fell apart in the post-split fixtures as they suffered four consecutive defeats against Motherwell, Hearts, Celtic and Hibernian, and they finished third in the table, 10 points behind their Old Firm rivals.

Despite the Rangers board giving their backing to Rohl after the conclusion of the season, the 37-year-old made a surprise move to RB Salzburg in June, and he has made a strong start to life in Austria.

Rohl has certainly made a big impact in the early stages of his tenure at RB Salzburg, winning 11 and drawing three of his 14 games in charge so far.

Salzburg currently sit second in the Austrian Bundesliga, one point behind leaders Rapid Vienna, after picking up 17 points from their opening seven league games, while Rohl has also led his side to the league phase of the Europa League, and their campaign got off to a positive start with a 1-0 victory at Levski Sofia last week.

As the extended three-week international break gets underway, Rohl reflected on his start at RB Salzburg on Instagram, writing: "14 games unbeaten - 11 wins.

"First step taken.

"My team is doing a fantastic job.

"We remain hungry and ambitious.

"I wish all my national team players the best of luck for the next two and a half weeks.

"A huge thank you for the amazing support."

Among those to react to Rohl's message was his former Wednesday player Windass, who notably described the German as the best manager he had ever worked with tactically "by a mile", with the 32-year-old liking the post.

Windass and Rohl were incredibly popular figures during their spells at Hillsborough, with the former scoring a last-minute winner to seal Wednesday's promotion to the Championship in 2023 and the latter saving the club from relegation from what looked like an impossible position.

However, both left the club last year during the summer of crisis under Chansiri, and Rohl's departure left a sour taste in the mouths of many Owls fans, particularly due to the timing of his exit and his public attempts to force a move to another club.

As Wednesday begin their new chapter under Storch's ownership, the events of last summer are slowly becoming less painful for supporters, and some may be pleased to see Rohl thriving in his new managerial role at RB Salzburg.
