Speaking at a press conference ahead of Germany’s Nations League game against Portugal (via Sky Sports), Joshua Kimmich spoke about Florian Wirtz’s decision to move to Liverpool.
On the 22-year-old’s pending move to England, the Germany captain said:
“He will have his reasons for making this decision. I hope it’s the right path for him. As a Bayern player, I would have naturally wanted him to come to us.”
Bayern Munich’s pursuit of Wirtz was very well documented. For most of the final quarter of the season, most of the media coverage was about the Bayer Leverkusen player’s near-certain move to the Bundesliga champions. Then, a few weeks ago, Liverpool entered the fray and were able to convince Wirtz to move to the Premier League.
Now, the Premier League winners and Leverkusen are in negotiations over the transfer fee for Wirtz. Bayern, on the other hand, have had to turn their attentions elsewhere and look for an alternative on the left-wing position.
On Wednesday, Germany play Portugal in the semi-finals of the Nations League in Munich. A win will see them play the winner of France vs Spain in the final next Sunday, once again in the Allianz Arena.
