Joshua Kushner has broken his silence on the abandoned plan to privatise the World Cup, saying his firm would not have taken part had it known how the affair would escalate.

More than a month after Gianni Infantino floated selling World Cup stakes to private investors, the backlash saw the idea dropped and support for the FIFA president ebb. According to Sky News, UEFA is preparing a criminal action against Infantino and has asked a New York court to compel Kushner to provide evidence linked to the project. He is not a target of that prospective case.

The American businessman, the project’s principal investor and close to Donald Trump, said Thrive Capital failed to grasp the political landscape of global football or the lengths some were prepared to go.

He maintained the initiative would have channelled significantly more investment to developing countries to train local talent, support grassroots football and improve the fan experience, with the aim of growing the game worldwide.

Kushner is the brother of Donald Trump’s son-in-law, and this was his first public comment on the controversy.
