Benfica’s move for Josip Sutalo could be at risk, with Lazio emerging as rivals for the Ajax defender. The Croatia international remains a leading target for Rui Costa’s board to strengthen central defence.

According to Alfredo Pedullà, Lazio have entered the race and view Sutalo as a potential successor to Alessio Romagnoli. Romagnoli’s deal runs until June 2027, which would allow him to sign freely with another club from January.

The Italian side are said to have held exploratory talks with Ajax to understand the terms of a possible departure. Ajax are open to negotiating for a fee in the region of 12 to 13 million euros.

The player’s preference could prove decisive. Sutalo is under contract at Ajax until the end of 2027/28 and has already turned down two concrete approaches from Saudi Arabian clubs.

Benfica must now contend with Lazio if they choose to move for the Croatian centre-back. A return for Victor Lindelof had been considered as an alternative, but the option is not viewed as viable.
