Liverpool’s wider struggles under Arne Slot have inevitably shifted attention onto squad stability, and on Anfield Index’s Media Matters, Dave Davis and David Lynch addressed one of the most important situations quietly developing in the background, Ibrahima Konaté’s future.
With his current deal set to expire in June, the conversation reflected cautious optimism, but also an awareness that Liverpool cannot afford missteps in another key contract decision.
David Lynch offered a relatively encouraging update when discussing the defender’s situation. “At no point has it felt like talks have been off,” he explained, suggesting that communication between Liverpool and Konaté’s representatives remains active.
That alone marks a contrast with other uncertain contract situations the club has faced. Lynch added that “his side have talked up the idea that they’re still pushing for it and trying to get it right,” reinforcing the sense that both parties are aligned in principle, even if no agreement has yet been finalised.
Dave Davis also pointed to emerging reports from France and the UK, noting that “the noises from France are that he’s more likely to sign a new deal,” while similar indications have come from within the Liverpool dressing room.
For Lynch, keeping Konaté is not just desirable, it is necessary. “They just need the continuity as well,” he said, underlining how important stability will be given Liverpool’s current turbulence under Arne Slot.
He acknowledged that the centre back has not been at his absolute best this season, but remained clear on his value. “Not been his best season, but I think he’s a great player,” Lynch said, before adding that “in a good team, he can be really, really important.”
That point is crucial in the broader context of Liverpool’s struggles. Rather than viewing individual dips in isolation, Lynch framed them as part of a wider team issue, one that should not overshadow the long term importance of players like Konaté.

While the discussion centred on Konaté, it inevitably linked back to Arne Slot and the club’s uncertain direction. Liverpool are balancing immediate performance concerns with longer term squad planning, and contract decisions like this carry added weight in that context.
Lynch made it clear that continuity in key areas could help stabilise the club moving forward, regardless of who is in charge. “I’ve gone on record many a time saying I think that’s a positive,” he said about a potential new deal, reinforcing his belief that keeping Konaté would benefit Liverpool beyond the current season.
Davis echoed that sentiment by highlighting the importance of resolving situations early, especially with external interest beginning to emerge.
The overall tone from Anfield Index was measured rather than alarmist. Unlike the more urgent discussions around Arne Slot, Konaté’s situation appears manageable, but still important.
Lynch summed it up simply, saying it “seems to be hopefully heading towards a positive conclusion.” Yet the use of “hopefully” reflects Liverpool’s recent track record, where decisions off the pitch have carried significant consequences on it.
For Liverpool, securing Ibrahima Konaté would represent more than just a contract extension. It would be a signal of intent, a commitment to building a stable core at a time when uncertainty surrounds the manager, performances and direction of the team.
In a season defined by questions, this is one Liverpool will be keen to answer correctly.
