Liverpool’s title defence has faded dramatically, with only four wins in their last fifteen across all competitions and a slide to eighth in the Premier League table. Arne Slot’s debut season delivered a historic title win, yet the current campaign has unravelled with alarming speed. Nowhere is this more visible than in the defensive line, where recurring errors have drained confidence and momentum. David Lynch’s forthright assessment, whilst talking to Dave Davis for Anfield Index, of Ibrahima Konate after the 3-3 draw at Leeds United captures a growing frustration around the club.
Lynch did not hesitate to pinpoint costly mistakes. His take was blunt and reflects a wider feeling around Anfield. He said: “People are right in saying that the penalty moment swings the game but we also wouldn’t have been saying that it was a good performance.”
Liverpool did show attacking resilience in that 3-3 draw, but every step forward appears matched by two backwards at the other end. Konate’s season has become defined by inconsistency and Lynch went further, adding: “I think Konate has been terrible this season, to be honest.”
That level of criticism would usually feel harsh for a defender of his pedigree, yet the pattern of errors has become impossible to ignore. Lynch stressed: “It was so, so silly. It was so easy to say that class is permanent and form is temporary, but I can’t stick with that line because the evidence is mounting and he is making a mistake every single week.”
This is not a single dip, it is a prolonged slump that is actively harming Liverpool’s ability to compete.
Konate has long been viewed as Virgil van Dijk’s natural successor, a defender with elite tools and high potential. However, Lynch captured the growing confusion. He said: “It’s really hard to understand what’s going on with him. People said that his head was already in Real Madrid, when it turns out that they didn’t even want him!”
With Joe Gomez fully fit and performing reliably when called upon, the pressure has intensified. As Lynch noted: “But whatever is going on, he is not playing well at the moment and he is making errors that are seriously costing Liverpool games.”
The implications are significant. Liverpool’s defensive frailties have repeatedly sabotaged promising spells in matches, and Slot can no longer ignore the pattern. Lynch underlined this reality with clarity: “His position, now that Joe Gomez is fully fit, has to be under pressure.”
Slot entered this season with the goodwill of a title winner, yet Premier League history shows how quickly circumstances can turn when results collapse. Defensive reliability forms the backbone of any side hoping to recover form. Lynch concluded with a line that will resonate across the fanbase and inside the club: “If Slot wants to save his job and salvage this season, then you can’t have a guy at the back who is giving away goals or penalties in every game at the moment.”
The message is unmistakable. Slot must act decisively. Konate may rediscover his best level, but Liverpool’s current situation leaves little room for sentiment. With the season slipping away, every selection and every defensive decision will shape the club’s trajectory.
