Despite reports this morning claiming Scott McTominay would travel to Italy to complete his Napoli medical, the midfielder has stayed in Manchester.

Significant advancements were made in Manchester United’s pursuit of Manuel Ugarte, who was also expected to undergo his medical at Carrington today after both clubs finally reached a breakthrough following a lengthy two months of negotiations.

The deal is poised to see United fork out an initial €50 million (£42m) plus a potential £8.4m in performance-based add-ons later down the line. Paris Saint-Germain were forced to lower their asking price eventually, having held out for £51m – the fee they paid for him last year – up to this stage.

As such, Ugarte’s prospective arrival at Old Trafford has, in turn, paved the way for McTominay to end his 22-year association with United. It comes against Erik ten Hag’s wishes to keep the Scot at his disposal, but McTominay was seemingly reluctant to play a bit part role – even if it was for his boyhood club.

The latest on Ugarte and McTominay’s prospective transfers

It is, however, looking increasingly improbable that either transfer gets over the line today. Chris Wheeler took to X/Twitter this afternoon to state that ‘Ugarte and McTominay deals [are] unlikely to go through today’.

He adds that the United graduate is still in England, while there’s ‘not enough time’ for Ugarte’s medical to be completed even if he makes the journey over from Paris.
