Juan Foyth has sustained a rupture of his left Achilles tendon, placing his World Cup hopes in jeopardy. According to SuperDepor.com, Villarreal's medical team confirmed the diagnosis after tests.

The Argentine was forced off after 24 minutes of the first half against Real Madrid on Saturday. Villarreal later lost 2-0 at La Cerámica in LaLiga matchday 21.

He will require surgery and the recovery timeframe is unclear, a concern for Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni. The defender is highly regarded as a candidate for the squad for the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada in June.

If the rupture proves complete, rehabilitation typically approaches a year, which would rule him out of a second World Cup. If it is partial, the lay-off would be shorter and a slim chance to make the 26-man squad would remain.

Marcelino García Toral said Foyth is a key figure in a young defence and that losing him is a heavy blow. He added the dressing room felt more sadness for the player than the result and stressed the need to move on.

Since joining Villarreal in 2020, this is the third long-term setback of his spell, following knee trouble and a right shoulder injury.
