Juan Mata, 38, has become a shareholder in Melbourne Victory. The club said in a statement that he will chair a newly created football committee once he decides to retire, calling the move a historic moment for the team and Australian football and describing Mata as a discerning investor with stakes in elite sports franchises worldwide.
The former Valencia player delivered a standout campaign, scoring five goals, supplying 12 assists and being named the Australian league’s best player. The investment extends his ties with the club beyond the pitch.
The announcement was made via the club’s social media channels. Mata becomes one of the few active international players to hold a stake in the club they play for.
Mata has been following the 2026 World Cup, commenting on several matches on ITV. He has appeared alongside former Valencia coach Gary Neville and Premier League great Patrick Vieira.
From the commentary box he saw Australia progress as runners-up ahead of Paraguay and Türkiye. They will face Egypt in the round of 32 on 3 July.
