Jürgen Klopp faces hostile Munich as Germany return to Allianz Arena to meet Serbia

Jürgen Klopp heads to a cool reception in Munich as Germany host Serbia in the Nations League on Thursday at 20:45. It is their first game at the Allianz Arena since he took charge, after a faltering start.

According to L'Équipe, the former Borussia Dortmund coach has never been widely liked in Bavaria, particularly since he led Dortmund to title wins in 2011 and 2012 at Bayern Munich’s expense. By Wednesday night only 40,000 tickets had been sold, barely over half the stadium’s capacity.

Heini, a Bayern season-ticket holder since 1984, said he would skip the game for the cinema, calling Klopp cynical and disrespectful towards Bayern. He also felt the coach’s news conferences lacked calm and predicted failure.

Bernd, a Bayern socio since 1978, said he agonised over buying a ticket but would attend to back a team in need. In his view Klopp has never been appreciated in Munich and, while jeering is unlikely, he expects general indifference.

Germany games rarely generate a memorable atmosphere at the Allianz Arena. The Serbia tie should bring a first win of the Klopp era after a 1-1 draw in the Netherlands and a 0-1 loss to Greece, although he cannot bank on unconditional home support.
