On Saturday, the German FA said in a statement it had reached an agreement with Jürgen Klopp to become Germany head coach, pending approval from Red Bull, his current employer.

DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke held initial talks with Klopp in New York on Friday. The meeting was described as constructive, with agreement on the main points of a potential contract.

Both sides are confident the process can be successfully concluded, provided Red Bull signs off.

Klopp, 59, has not returned to the dugout since leaving Liverpool in 2024. Since one January 2025, he has been under contract with Red Bull as global director of football, overseeing the clubs owned by the Austrian energy drink brand.

Should he be appointed, Klopp would replace Julian Nagelsmann, who departed after Germany were knocked out of the 2026 World Cup in the round of 32 by Paraguay, 1-1, 4-3 on penalties.
