Julen Guerrero, 52, suffered a heart attack after feeling unwell last week and was taken to hospital. Marca reports that his condition has improved and he is out of danger.

The former Spain international was part of João Diogo Manteigas’ ticket in Benfica’s most recent elections, where he was presented as director of the academy.

Guerrero is one of Athletic Bilbao’s modern icons, having spent his entire professional career at the club. From 1992 to 2006 he played 403 games and scored 107 goals.

He is currently general director at CD Estepona, a side competing in the fourth tier of Spanish football.

Manteigas’ candidacy finished third in the first round with 11.48% of the vote, so it did not advance to the decisive phase.
