Julián Álvarez could use a legal route to leave Atlético Madrid and join Barcelona without triggering his 500 million euros release clause. Mundo Deportivo reports that the Argentina forward could rely on Article 16 of Royal Decree 1006/1985, which governs professional athletes’ contracts.

The regulation allows a player to terminate a contract unilaterally even when no fault is attributed to the club. In that event Atlético would be due compensation, set by the labour courts if no deal is reached, weighing damage to the club, sporting circumstances and the reasons for the split.

Álvarez is under contract at Atlético until 2030 on a salary of about 12.5 million euros gross per season.

Article 16 also says that if the player signs for another club within one year of ending his deal, the new employer is subsidiarily liable for the financial obligations arising from the rupture. In a hypothetical Barcelona transfer, the Catalan club would have to meet whatever compensation is finally determined.

FIFA would not have jurisdiction here because both teams are Spanish, so any dispute would sit with the ordinary courts in Spain. For now this remains a legal possibility rather than a decision taken by Álvarez.
