Atlas striker Julián Quiñones equalised in stoppage time and was then was sent off in a dramatic end to a typically feisty Clásico Tapatío on Sunday.
Scorers: Quiñones 90+1; Alvarado 66′
There were no goals in the first half at the Estadio Jalisco but a flashpoint just before the interval saw both sides reduced to ten men.
A challenge between Alexis Vega and Jairo Torres set things in motion, with Miguel Ponce rushing in to put his hands around the latter’s neck.
Referee César Ramos showed no hesitation by showing the red card to Ponce, and then following a VAR review also dismissed Atlas winger Torres for his reaction to the Chivas defender’s intervention.
The visitors introduced José Juan Macías as a half-time substitute and he played an integral part in the opener.
His initial shot was saved by goalkeeper Camilo Vargas only for the rebound to drop to Roberto Alvarado who finished from close range.
It seemed that would be enough to give the Flock bragging rights in the Guadalajara derby, but Quiñones had other ideas.
Substitute Aníbal Chalá managed to float in a cross from the left flank that Quiñones nodded in much to the delight of the home crowd.
But his personal joy proved short-lived, as he was shown a straight red card for a gesture deemed offensive by the official.
