Valencia’s new centre-back Justin de Haas is using red light therapy during his holidays to arrive in peak condition for pre-season under Carlos Corberán.
According to Superdeporte, the Dutch defender posted images on social media showing him with a Heilys red light panel. The pictures show sessions of so-called red light therapy, increasingly used by elite athletes to aid recovery.
Heilys specialises in photobiomodulation devices using red and near infrared light. Its panels emit wavelengths between 630 and 850 nanometres, designed to stimulate cellular regeneration, blood flow and muscle recovery.
The technology is marketed as supporting recovery after exercise, reducing inflammation and easing joint and muscle discomfort, and may help with rest and overall wellbeing.
In elite sport it is used as a complementary tool within recovery protocols, aiming to help athletes cope with heavy training and competition loads. Targets include faster muscle recovery, less fatigue and soreness, improved circulation and tissue oxygenation, better sleep during demanding periods.
Research has grown in recent years and studies have explored potential effects on muscle recovery and inflammation, yet specialists say outcomes still vary by device, intensity and protocol. It is treated as a complement, not a replacement for training, nutrition, rest, physiotherapy and load management.
