Chiesa transfer rumours refuse to fade at Liverpool

Speculation has a habit of gathering around players who appear caught between promise and opportunity. Federico Chiesa finds himself in that space once more, his Liverpool career still searching for rhythm, while familiar whispers from Italy grow louder. Juventus, the club he left behind, have been linked with a possible return, even as Liverpool insist there is no intention of letting the winger slip away quietly.

Chiesa arrived at Anfield in the summer of 2024 carrying reputation and expectation in equal measure. What followed has been stop start. Injuries, competition for places and tactical demands have limited his influence, with 34 appearances yielding only seven starts. Enough, perhaps, to keep the conversation alive without ever allowing it to settle.

Juventus links and January speculation

Reports from Italy have suggested Juventus are exploring the idea of a loan move during the January window. Turin remains familiar ground for Chiesa, a place where his direct running and sharp acceleration once defined him. Yet familiarity alone does not complete transfers.

Liverpool, for their part, have not received a formal approach. Arne Slot has publicly framed Chiesa as a useful option during a congested season, particularly with Alexander Isak sidelined. In that context, letting the winger leave mid campaign would feel counterintuitive, especially for a squad still adjusting to a new manager.

Spalletti plays down return talk

Luciano Spalletti, now speaking as Juventus boss, has been keen to cool the temperature. Asked directly about Chiesa, his response was pointed in its casual dismissal.

“I am pleased you are giving me this news, seeing as we haven’t even had a meeting yet on the transfer market, but it’s the first I’ve heard of it,” Spalletti said when questioned about the links with Chiesa via Football Italia.

“For the moment, it’s just thrown out there, but absolutely nothing concrete behind it.”

The message was clear. Juventus may admire, but they are not actively moving.

Italy manager comments add context

Spalletti’s words carry extra weight given his previous stance. Twelve months earlier, while managing Italy, he openly encouraged Chiesa to return to Serie A, arguing that proximity mattered.

Asked whether he would welcome a return to Italy for Chiesa last January, Spalletti said: “Yes, I would be very much in favour of having Chiesa under our watch in terms of the level of our football, to reintegrate him.

“Because those who have this quality of looking you in the eye and breaking the line in front of them to get to the next one…there aren’t many of them.”

For now, Chiesa remains suspended between past and possibility, with Liverpool still believing his story at Anfield has further chapters to write.
