Manchester United are in the hunt for an interim manager after sacking Ruben Amorim on Monday following his stunning outburst against the club’s hierarchy.

Darren Fletcher led the team during Wednesday’s 2-2 draw at Burnley, and he will be in the dugout when United face Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend.

Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have emerged as the two leading candidates to become the Red Devils’ interim manager.

The Guardian claims Carrick has edged closer to Solskjaer in the race, but the latter is the slight favourite.

The club will reportedly not make a final decision until both men have been interviewed.

Carrick could be open to becoming his assistant if Solskjaer is appointed.

The former England international led United for three matches after the Norwegian’s sacking in November 2021.

Solskjaer took over as the club’s caretaker manager in December 2018 following Jose Mourinho’s departure.

His interim tenure was so impressive that they appointed him to the permanent role.

The 52-year-old led his team to third and second-place league finishes before a miserable run resulted in his dismissal in 2021.

Carrick has been out of a job since being sacked by Middlesbrough in June.

He guided Boro to a Championship play-off finish in 2022-23, but they missed out on the top six in the next two seasons.
