Juventus emerge as Chiesa frontrunners

Roma, AC Milan and Napoli were chief among them but owing to a combination of factors no deal could be done. Chiesa’s wage - estimated at £140k per week - is too rich for most Italian clubs.

And Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes was never going to give him away for free either. It meant Serie A sides were limited to offering only a loan deal for Chiesa - which was not appealing to Liverpool.

Chiesa stuck at it, making himself an option for Slot during the 2025/26 season.

He has provided two top-flight goals and has been a bigger presence in and around the squad. For that he deserves credit but it always looked likely that the club would entertain a January deal if the right offer was made.

Juventus came forward - with head coach Luciano Spalletti keen to work with Chiesa again following their time together in the Italian national team.

Juventus turn to Boga

The Old Lady could offer a loan fee plus an option to buy - but even this structure wasn’t appealing enough for Liverpool to do business.

We are led to believe that Chiesa would have been open to a deal because he is seeking to reestablish himself in the Italy squad ahead of the FIFA World Cup playoffs in March.

Gaining first-team football would have no doubt aided though efforts but right now he is stuck on one start for Liverpool in the league and not reckoned to be in contention for many more.

Juve however walked away and concluded a loan deal for Nice winger Jeremie Boga instead. The finances work much better for the Turin giants - who would have been paying up to £13m in a loan fee plus a permanent obligation plus wages for Chiesa.

The Euro 2020 winger has in effect been priced out of a deal and unless he can make another breakthrough under Slot he is set for a very frustrating spell on the sidelines for the second half of the campaign.
