Kairat centre-back Yegor Sorokin has openly admitted that his team will have to work as a unit to contain Kylian Mbappe when his side takes on Real Madrid for Tuesday’s Champions League clash.

The Russian defender was honest in his assessment of the challenge, recognising that even the smallest mistake could be punished by Madrid’s quality.

“Kylian Mbappe is a player who can decide games on his own,” Sorokin said, making it clear that the focus of Kairat’s defence will be on trying to restrict the Frenchman.

“Marking Mbappe is a team effort. We will do everything we can to make him uncomfortable on the pitch. Real Madrid is a top club, and we’ll pay dearly for any mistake.”

With Mbappe already in electric form this season and supported by the likes of Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Jr. and Rodrygo, the task awaiting the Kazakh champions looks daunting.

Sorokin stressed that his side have prepared all week for this game, saying he and his teammates “are ready” for the test. He also described the mood in the squad ahead of facing Madrid.

“The atmosphere is tense, not out of fear, but rather out of concentration and awareness of the importance of the meeting,” he explained.

Even so, Kairat know they are coming up against a level of opposition rarely seen in Almaty.

Sorokin pointed out that “discipline and teamwork” would be the key to getting any kind of result, insisting that “discipline trumps quality.”

However, in Europe’s biggest competition, quality usually prevails, and Madrid possess it in abundance.

For Kairat, this game represents national pride and the chance to showcase Kazakhstan on the continental stage, but for Real Madrid, it is another step in their pursuit of glory – with Mbappe expected to play a decisive role.
