Our Premier League Awards honour the best – and worst – of the weekend’s action.
Eddie Nketiah has struggled with injuries and poor form in front of goal since swapping Arsenal for Crystal Palace, but the striker generated one of the best moments of his career on Saturday.
Liverpool thought they had denied the Eagles a famous victory when super sub Federico Chiesa scored a late equaliser to cancel out Ismaila Sarr’s early opener. That was until superior sub Nketiah netted an even later goal to take the spoils.
The Reds failed to clear their lines three times from a long throw-in before it eventually fell to the striker to smash it past Alisson Becker and spark rapturous scenes among the home crowd.
Another banner performance from Erling Haaland, who grabbed a brace and two goals against Burnley this past weekend. The Manchester City striker assisted Matheus Nunes for his goal before striking twice late on to complete a 5-1 win and take them up to seventh in the table.
This is only his fourth season with City and he has already netted 133 goals in all competitions, putting him eighth in the club’s all-time list of goal scorers.
A very close runner-up for Player of the Week, Leeds United midfielder Sean Longstaff put in an outstanding shift against Bournemouth on Saturday, capped off by a wonderful strike from the edge of the box.
It’s rare enough these days that we see wingers take on their man before swinging in a dangerous cross; most teams have moved away from it as a tactic.
That’s why we absolutely loved seeing Yankuba Minteh receive the ball out wide and square up to Malo Gusto before firing in a perfect ball for Danny Welbeck’s equaliser against Chelsea. The Brighton attacker has been excellent so far this season.
This does not fall into the category of horror miss that we usually feature in this section, but we have to talk about Mo Salah and his misguided intervention at Selhurst Park.
With Liverpool chasing a goal, Dominik Szoboszlai swung in a dangerous shot from the right side box which headed for the far corner of the net. We will never know, of course, because Salah stuck out his leg, sending the ball flying high and wide.
That moment was a sad reflection of the Egyptian winger’s form this season, which has been a million miles off the scintillating performances he put in last term.
We’re not sure how referee Jarred Gillett or the VAR missed this forearm strike from Gabriel Magalhaes on Nick Woltemade. Following the big German’s goal for Newcastle United, the Arsenal defender seemingly connects with his face after charging into him.
Rather than go down clutching his face, Woltemade confronted Gabriel about the incident and angrily remonstrated with him. There’s something refreshing, if old-school, about a player standing on business instead of flopping like a fish, but it ironically saved the centre-back from a red card.
Danny Welbeck was perfectly happy to take a booking from Simon Hooper after shooting Brighton to victory.
Saturday started out so well for Raul Jimenez. The Fulham striker scored early against Aston Villa after getting his first start since the opening weekend. But had to be taken off after seemingly injuring himself during the goal, making him the first player in over a decade to start, score and be subbed that early in a Premier League match.
11 – Raúl Jiménez is the first player to start, score a goal, and then be subbed inside 11 minutes of a Premier League match since Chelsea's Samuel Eto'o versus Arsenal in March 2014 (10th minute). Brief. — OptaJoe (@optajoe.com) 2025-09-28T13:17:12.600Z
With Rodrigo Muniz also on the treatment table, the Cottagers may struggle in front of goal in the coming weeks.
Ruben Amorim, who still has not managed consecutive wins in the Premier League since becoming the Manchester United boss. Their 3-1 defeat at Brentford was their third of the season and the 19th of the Portuguese tactician’s tenure.
It can’t go on like this, can it? In the words of Mick McCarthy, it can.
