Kaizer Chiefs played to a goalless draw with AS Simba of Democratic Republic of Congo in the first leg of the second preliminary round on Saturday.
In extreme weather conditions at Stade TP Mazembe, where the game was marred by lack of live broadcast, the two teams couldn't bypass each other.
The Soweto giants hit the bar in the first half through Khanyisa Mayo, who was lured to Naturena on a season-long loan from Algerian giants CR Belouizdad.
Simba will be content with keeping Chiefs at bay and not conceding the crucial away goal in their backyard ahead of the return leg next week.
The onus is on Amakhosi to shut the backdoor in South Africa, with the game set to be staged at Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday, 25 October.
Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze will be keen to reign supreme in the two-legged tie as they look to guide Chiefs to the group phase of the tournament.
