England captain Harry Kane has spoken openly for the first time about the role Thomas Tuchel played in his transfer to FC Bayern in the summer of 2023. At the England national team press conference, the striker made it clear: without Tuchel, the transfer might never have happened.

Before the World Cup qualifier against Albania, Harry Kane gave an insight into his past – and his connection to Thomas Tuchel. The former Bayern coach was one of the most important factors in the English superstar taking the step to the Bundesliga in the first place.

„Thomas Tuchel was the main reason why I moved to FC Bayern Munich in the first place,“ explained Kane. „I love his energy, I love his goals and his style of play.“

Kane, who had worked at Tottenham Hotspur for years under various coaches, describes his first meeting with Tuchel as a landmark moment. „That relationship I had from the first moment I met him set me on the right path.“

Tuchel saw him not just as a top striker, but as a leader who shared his vision. „I think when he got the job, he saw me as an important leader in the team and someone who would help him get to know some of the players and staff, understand the culture and keep a lot of the good things.“

So the respect between the two was mutual – and went far beyond the purely sporting.

While Tuchel had to put up with a lot of criticism during his time at FC Bayern, he continues to be an influential name in international soccer following his move to the England national team. Under his leadership, England are still unbeaten in the World Cup qualifiers, most recently with a commanding 5-0 win over Latvia to secure early qualification for next summer’s tournament.

Kane emphasized that Tuchel is not only perceived as a top coach in Germany, but also worldwide. „Other teams know that he is one of the best coaches in the world, and that also carries weight,“ said England’s record goalscorer.

Tuchel has not only stabilized the team, but also established clear structures early on – something Kane was already familiar with from Munich.
