Manchester United face a battle with their Premier League rivals to sign highly rated Norwich City defender Kellen Fisher after scouts delivered glowing reports, according to a new report.

Jack of All Trades

A versatile full-back, capable of playing on either flank, Fisher’s stock continues to rise after joining Norwich from League Two side Bromley for around £100,000 in 2023.

The 21-year-old won the Canaries’ Young Player of the Year award last season, playing 38 times while delivering four assists from right-back mainly, though he also played on the wing on both flanks.

Fisher has built on this progress and established himself as a permanent fixture in Phillipe Clement’s side this season. He made his debut for England Under-21s in November, coming off the bench in a 4-0 win over Slovakia in a European Championship qualifier.

Fisher’s tactical intelligence and relentless work rate are his standout qualities, enabling him to play effectively in a variety of roles across the pitch.

Championship analysts have been impressed by his composure in possession, as well as his confidence in driving forward to join attacks from defence. A number of England’s biggest clubs, including Manchester United, have “watched him closely in recent weeks” as they spy a bargain deal for a defender who is a manager’s dream as a squad player, according to TEAMtalk.

Eyed by England’s Elite

Alongside United, the report states Fisher is “firmly on the radar” of Arsenal, Brighton, Brentford, Everton, Fulham and Newcastle. All seven Premier League clubs have dispatched scouts to East Anglia to watch the youngster in person as they “assess his readiness for a step up” to England’s top division.

“Fisher’s ability to operate on both flanks, combined with his composure on the ball and willingness to join the attack, has made him one of the most sought-after young defenders outside the top flight.

“Fisher’s versatility is a major asset, allowing him to operate effectively on both flanks. He reads the game well, often intercepting passes and positioning himself to break up attacks before they develop.”

Fisher’s contract at Carrow Road runs until 2028, making this summer the last chance for Norwich to cash in on their rising star. Everton are understood to be leading the charge after coming close to making a move in January, with David Moyes on the hunt for a new right-back.

However, the 21-year-old’s versatility will undoubtedly be attractive to Manchester United’s hierarchy, given the lack of depth out wide at Old Trafford. Manchester United’s priority this summer will be a comprehensive overhaul of the midfield, with the club’s primary targets – Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton – expected to cost up to £100 million each.

As such, a low-money recruit from the Championship with the ability to provide depth in a variety of positions makes sense as a facilitator to this drive to bolster the middle of the pitch.
